Learning System description

Most experienced leaders are described by their job history rather than by the value they create. Executive Leadership Positioning is a structured program for changing that.

You work from your own real career evidence to find the leadership themes that repeat across it, translate those themes into value an executive audience recognizes, and build a positioning statement and leadership narrative you can defend line by line.

You then adapt that one position for the rooms you actually enter — internal advancement, the external market, executive search, your professional network, your biography and profile — without letting the versions contradict each other.

The course finishes with validation: how to check every claim, name a real gap honestly, and keep the position accurate as your career changes.

Nothing in the course asks you to embellish. The standard throughout is that every claim you make is one you could defend if questioned directly.

Learning System outcome

By the end you hold a complete positioning body of work in your own private documents: a leadership evidence inventory, a scope and complexity calibration, a leadership theme map, an executive value map, a leadership problem portfolio, a positioning statement, an expanded leadership narrative, audience-specific versions, an executive biography and profile draft, spoken introductions, a claim validation log, a gap analysis against a named target, and a positioning maintenance plan.

Who it's for

This course is for:

  • Senior individual contributors, managers, directors, and executives whose description of their work has not kept up with the work itself.
  • Leaders preparing for internal advancement who need to be understood by decision-makers who do not see their work daily.
  • Leaders entering the external market or working with executive search who need a consistent, credible account of what they lead.
  • Leaders with non-linear careers, title mismatches, or industry transitions who need to position honestly against a target rather than explain themselves apologetically.
  • Leaders who dislike self-promotion and want a truthful alternative to it.

Who it's not for

This course is not for:

  • Anyone looking for language that inflates or invents experience.
  • Anyone at the very start of their career with no leadership evidence yet to work from.
  • Anyone who wants interview answer coaching — that is Course 1, The Art of the Executive Interview.
  • Anyone looking for delivery, voice, or room-presence training — that is a later course in this path.

What you'll learn

You will learn:

  • What executive positioning actually is, and the five common things that are mistaken for it.
  • The evidence standard: what you may claim, what you may reasonably estimate, and what you must not say.
  • How to build a complete inventory of your leadership evidence, including work you have discounted or shared with others.
  • How to state scope, ownership, authority, and altitude at their true level.
  • How to find the leadership themes that repeat across an entire career.
  • How to translate those themes into the value dimensions executives evaluate.
  • How to name the classes of problem you are equipped to lead.
  • How to write a positioning statement and an expanded leadership narrative.
  • How to adapt one position across many audiences without contradiction.
  • How to write biography, profile, and spoken introductions that agree with each other.
  • How to validate claims, respect confidentiality, and correct overstatement.
  • How to analyze gaps against a target role and state them honestly.
  • How to detect drift and run positioning as an ongoing system.

5-module preview

  1. Module 1 — What Executive Positioning Actually Is

Establishes what an executive audience is really deciding, separates positioning from the five things most often mistaken for it, and sets the evidence standard that governs every claim you make for the rest of the course.

  2. Module 2 — Finding the Leadership Evidence and the Themes Inside It

A structured pass through your whole career to surface the leadership evidence you have — including work you shared or discounted — calibrate scope, ownership, authority, and altitude accurately, and identify the themes that repeat.

  3. Module 3 — Constructing the Executive Leadership Position

Translates your themes into the value dimensions executives evaluate, names the classes of problem you are equipped to lead, and builds your positioning statement and expanded leadership narrative.

  4. Module 4 — Communicating the Position Across Audiences

Adapts one position for internal advancement, the external market, executive search, and your network, and aligns your written surfaces — biography, profile — and spoken introductions so they agree.

  5. Module 5 — Validating, Repairing, and Maintaining the Position

Verifies every claim, handles confidentiality, analyzes gaps against a target role honestly, corrects overstatement and drift, and turns positioning into a system you maintain rather than a document you rewrite in a hurry.

Learning System format

  • 5 modules
  • 15 lessons
  • 5 downloadable resources (128 pages)
  • 5 module knowledge checks
  • 1 final assessment
  • 1 practical application

Included resources

  • Executive Leadership Positioning Workbook

The single working document that carries your positioning work from first exercise to finished position, so it accumulates in one place instead of scattering.

  • Leadership Evidence & Theme Discovery Guide

Structured prompts that surface leadership evidence you have forgotten or discounted, and help you state scope and ownership at their true level.

  • Positioning Statement & Narrative Construction Kit

Construction patterns and worked before-and-after examples that get you from a theme to a statement and narrative you can defend.

  • Audience Adaptation & Executive Bio Pack

Templates and worked examples for every audience and surface, with a consistency check that catches contradictions between versions.

  • Positioning Validation, Gap & Maintenance Toolkit

Tools for verifying claims, naming gaps honestly against a target role, and keeping your position accurate as your career changes.

Assessment format

Each of the five modules ends with a short multiple-choice knowledge check, which you may retake as many times as you need after reviewing a brief remediation summary. The course ends with a timed multiple-choice final assessment covering all five modules — the time limit is managed by the Academy, not your browser, so refreshing or changing devices does not affect it. You then complete a guided practical in which you validate your own positioning work, correct at least one weak or unsupported claim, name a real gap, and set one action. Your positioning materials stay private: the Academy records only your confirmations and self-ratings, never your career content.

Certificate

Completing the course earns a Rita Vail Academy Certificate of Completion for Executive Leadership Positioning, viewable and downloadable from your account and retained there after your membership ends.

It is a record of course completion — not a professional certification, license, accreditation, or academic credit, is not recognized by any government or accrediting body, and is not a qualification for employment or an assurance of any outcome.
